Happy Ethiopian New Year

Happy Ethiopian New Year

Ethiopia has its own calendar and Ethiopian New Year will be celebrated September 11th. This will ring in 2017 (Ethiopia calendar is 7 years behind the Gregorian calendar).  The shop and workshop will be closed September 11th-12th to celebrate.

Ethiopians will wear their best and adorn their houses with Meskel flowers (Ethiopia’s national flower)  that only bloom in this season. It is customary to eat a feast at the New Year and share generously with others.  The markets are bustling the days before the New Year. People buy ingredients for the traditional Doro Wot (chicken stew), along with mutton, cheese curd, spiced butter and eggs. Traditional drinks will be brewed at home. Tella (beer made from buckthorn leaves used for fermentation, and barley) and Tej (honey wine) are favorites, along with coffee, of course.
