In Ethiopia, Meskel is one of the most important religious holidays observed by Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. It commemorates the discovery of the True Cross by Saint Helen, mother of Emperor Constantine. The holiday is on September 27th and involves colorful processions, traditional music, and elaborate bonfires called “Demera”. Sabahar will be closed Thursday, 26 September from noon and all day Friday, September 27th.
The Ethiopian daisy, or Meskel flower, only blooms in this season. It is symbolic of both Ethiopian New Year and Meskel. We also collect and dry it to use as a natural dye for our silks.
During the celebration, participants dress in traditional, hand made white garments, sing hymns and carry crosses and banners.
The lighting of the bonfire the night before symbolizes the joy of finding the True Cross and serves as the focal point for communal gatherings.
Meskel is not only a religious event but also a time for family reunions and cultural festivities, showcasing Ethiopian rich culture. Meskel is a very important holiday for people in Southern Ethiopia, where most of our weavers are from. It is customary to return from the cities to home villages to celebrate with family.
