These silk scarves are made of a combination of Ethiopian Eri and Mulberry silk. They are individually pot dyed using natural dyes- many found in the plants and soils of Ethiopia. The navy is colored using logwood; the silver is combination of iron and pomegranate. The Eri silk is from Ethiopia and hand spun on drop spindles. The Mulberry silk is imported from India. They are finished with our signature twisted fringe. The combination are unique, delicate, graceful scarves. These scarves are named after Ethiopia's most famous queen- Queen Saba (or Sheba).

Behind the Weave: How it's Made?
Behind the Weave: How it's Made?
What makes Sabahar scarves and shawls different?
Most scarves today are made from synthetic fibres or mass-produced blends that prioritize speed over quality. Sabahar’s scarves and shawls are crafted from 100% natural Ethiopian cotton and silk, with some designs using hand-spun yarn for added texture and softness. These natural fibres are breathable, biodegradable, and kind to the skin.
How are they made?
Each scarf and shawl is woven by hand, using traditional Ethiopian techniques that have been passed down through generations. While some designs incorporate hand-spun cotton or silk, others use finely milled natural fibres for intricate patterns and subtle textures. From dyeing to finishing, every step is done by hand.
Who makes them?
Sabahar is a fair trade, women-owned business that has been operating for over 20 years. We provide fair wages, safe working conditions, and long-term employment to over 100 artisans in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
What truly sets them apart?
It’s not just the materials - it’s the exceptional skill of our weavers. Working with ultra-fine yarns requires time, precision, and mastery. These pieces take longer to make and demand a level of care few artisans can offer. The result is a lightweight, elegant textile that wears beautifully and lasts.
Why does it matter?
By choosing Sabahar, you're investing in a product that supports livelihoods, preserves craft heritage, and reduces environmental harm - a small choice that makes a real difference.

I love this scarf! It is a beautiful rich color and very high quality workmanship. It gives a certain elegance to an ordinary sweater.
As always, I am delighted by the beauty and the quality of the craft of spinning, weaving, and coloring the shawls. I wear them with pride. Sabahar and Afar products are the best of African culture in their products.
I had lost my Sabahar silk scarf that I'd had for more than 15 years and knowing that no other scarf can compare in terms of rich color and soft touch (with no static issues), I had to get another. I'm hoping I can hang on to this one for at least another 15 years because these scarves don't go out of style and they hold up!
