The Telba shawls are made from luxurious imported Belgian linen thread, handwoven on traditional Ethiopian looms to create a beautifully light, eco-friendly piece. Richly colored and finished with delicate eyelash fringes, these shawls showcase the timeless elegance of linen. The word "Telba," meaning flax or linen in Amharic, pays homage to the material's significance, as Ethiopia is yet to cultivate flax for linen fiber production despite being a leading exporter of linseed. Designed and produced in Ethiopia, these handwoven shawls embody both craftsmanship and sustainable beauty.

Behind the Weave: How it's Made?
Behind the Weave: How it's Made?
What makes Sabahar scarves and shawls different?
Sabahar scarves and shawls are mainly made from natural Ethiopian fibres, such as hand spun cotton and silk. Some designs use hand-spun yarn, giving each piece a distinct texture and feel that machines cannot reproduce. Working with fine threads requires great skill and patience, and no two scarves are exactly alike. Each one reflects the care and time invested by the weaver.
How are they made?
All our scarves and shawls are handmade in our workshop in Addis Ababa. The yarn is first spun by hand, then dyed and woven by skilled artisans using traditional Ethiopian looms. Depending on the design, weavers use different loom setups to create subtle textures or patterned weaves. Each piece is finished by hand, often with twisted or tied fringes, resulting in a textile that is beautiful, functional, and made to last.
Who makes them?
Sabahar is a fair-trade, women-owned business that has been operating for over 20 years. We provide fair wages, safe working conditions, and long-term employment to over 100 artisans in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Why it matters?
Choosing Sabahar means supporting ancient crafts and the people who keep it alive. Our textiles are made from 100% Ethiopian cotton, naturally breathable and biodegradable. Each towel carries the story of the hands that made it and the tradition it helps sustain - a small choice that makes a real difference.

This shawl was a great gift--it's very light but linen is hard to beat for durability. It feels just a bit stiff when new, but softens with age/use and will quickly become a favorite.
This shawl is gorgeous and very high qualtiy. It came quickly. Your work is amazing.
Admittedly, I'm biased. There was a time in my life when I traveled to Ethiopia regularly for work, which gave me the opportunity to visit the Sabahar store in Addis several times. I've been a HUGE fan ever since. The quality is excellent and the piece is BEAUTIFUL Plus, it's handmade by Ethiopian artisans, which makes it special. I'll continue buying from Sabahar, my go to store for cotton/linen textiles!
